South Oxfordshire District Council
Message from Councillor Bill Service
Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism-South Oxfordshire District Council

South Oxfordshire District Council started working in partnership with Nexus Community in April 2009 with an aim to increase participation in sport and active recreation across the district. Introducing residents to a range of new activities and encouraging everyone to visit our eight leisure facilities, is key to achieving this.
In September 2009, we launched a district-wide community leisure card to help make access to leisure centres easier for all. The card offers a range of membership options for all ages and allows different frequencies of use.
We believe exercise habits are created in childhood and are keen to encourage our younger residents to stay with us, progressing from Sports Academy activities, to becoming regular adult users of our facilities.
Nexus has also worked hard to develop the exercise referral programme within the centres. This helps residents who are referred by a health professional to improve their health and help manage the chronic conditions of some of our residents in a safe environment.
Nexus is also developing links within the local community working extremely closely with Get Oxfordshire (GO) Active and funding two part-time staff to help deliver projects for local residents. The aim is to help everyone lead a more active lifestyle by providing social and fun activities close to home to make getting fit more enjoyable. This again helps us achieve our aim of increasing participation in sport and physical activity.
