Nexus In The Community
Nexus Community is an integral part of the communities we serve. We operate centres that act as a hub, bringing people together and facilitating a lifetime of experiences from learning to swim, making new friends or helping you to recover from a health issue.
Our work is not just limited to traditional leisure activities within sports centres. Nexus delivers activities and services that have been identified by you, where you want them, and involving you.
We are proud to work in partnership with our Councils and other partners to help increase physical activity levels and the health of our communities through projects such as Get Oxfordshire Active and Re-Activate Bucks.
Nexus takes an active role in many local networks and use our facilities, experience and leisure activities to support wider aims and objectives. Our Community Activators develop a wide range of community based activities, that bring local communities together, improve health, provide opportunities for employment or training, reduce social isolation and remove barriers to participation.
We provide a wide range of youth and play focused activities and services in partnership with various agencies and organisations. Projects such as Play Rangers, Diversionary Activities, Street Games, the RUSH project and Go For It all provide opportunities for children and young people while promoting community cohesion and reducing antis social behaviour and the fear of crime.
The Nexus Active for Health Programme is recognised both locally and regionally by health professionals and agencies for its high quality service. The programme provides a wide range of services in your local leisure centre including, GP Exercise Referral, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Falls Prevention and Ti Chi for Health as well as various activities suitable for older people.
Partnership
Nexus aims to be more than just an excellent provider of leisure activities. We strive to be a partner that can provide wider benefit and support local outcomes and aspirations.
Our management team understands the needs of our local authority partners and actively participates in promoting their agendas and meeting outcomes. Our activities and services support the common themes being sought by Local Strategic Partnerships such as stronger communities, healthier communities, economic wellbeing, children and young people and the environment.
Nexus is engaged in networks at various levels from Regional Sport & Physical Activity forums to ward level Local Area Forums (LAF).
At County, District and Town/Parish level we have formed effective partnerships with other agencies and service providers. These include:
- Youth Service
- Police and Community Safety Officers
- PCT, hospital trusts, GP surgeries
- Social Services
- Adult Services
- Housing Associations
- Bucks Sport and Oxfordshire Sports Partnership
- Early Years and Extended Services
- Voluntary and Community Group – Age Concern etc.
Nexus is a social enterprise with charitable objectives. The company benefits from significant tax advantages – VAT exemption, NNDR relief and exemption from corporation tax. Surpluses are re-invested in improvements and extension of facilities and services. However to meet many local community needs, additional funding is required. Nexus has been very successful in developing unique initiatives that have attracted just under £400,000 of funding in the last 15 months from sources such as Sport England, Big Lottery Fund, PCT’s, and local authorities (adults social care, Community safety, Early Years, Youth Service). In many cases Nexus has stretched this funding by providing considerable in kind contribution providing free activities, discounts and hosting new funded posts.
